What is the best way to raise money to help others?

I am currently in charge of a "SECRET SANTA" program in our community. We have 18 families who have lost a child or a parent of small children in the past 12 months. We are trying to raise money for these families to help with Christmas. While we know we could never even begin to replace the lost of their loved ones, we are hoping to bring some joy to their first Christmas since their loss. Some of these families need money, food, etc. while others will receive an item to honor their loved ones or a vacation or other need they may have.


Our goal is to raise at least $1,000 per family. If anyone has some ideas on how to raise money in a short time, your help would be appreciated. Don't forget to engage your local churches, you might be able to get them to enlist their congregation to accept offerings in the name of your project or more specifically to the family of choice but you will need to make a plea to them.


Bake sales are always good to make money with too.
