How much money roughly will I need backpacking around Mexico for 3 weeks?

Please if anyone could give me a rough estimation in British Pounds of how much money I would need backpacking around Mexico (accommodation and spending money)





I am starting off in Mexico City and ending in Cancun, although I'd like to avoid the extreme touristy places. Obviously I know this will depend on whether I stay in posh hotels or hostels but just a rough guess to how much mixing the two.

How much money roughly will I need backpacking around Mexico for 3 weeks?
Mexico is 1800km approx from Cancun, there is no straight line road and the direct bus takes like 24hs. Airfares are prohibitive, 400 euros. The Cancun area is a rip off, but the rest of Mexico is very cheap for european standards. You can easily live on 100 euros a day, including lodging, decent food, museum-parks admissions, an occasional bus ticket, etc. Cancun is not interesting itself, but its your hub to visit Tulum, Chichen itza, Playa del Carmen and the superb parks of Xcaret and Xel-ha, all these places are between 2-3hs from Cancun. Also Merida is 30 min from Cancun, a must see, do not miss it. Make your itinerary to stop at Palenque and Campeche ruins on your way from Mexico.
Reply:You'll have to do the converting. Hotels that are decent run anywhere from $30 a night to as much as you want to spend. I have no idea what prices are in Cancun - not my cup of tea - but more for sure. You might look for hostels which are less. Meals can run from a total of $10 to $12 dollars a day to as much as you want to spend. Take a credit card and get money from ATMs rather than caring that much money around. How much walking around money? That is up to you.





Get a copy of "People's Guide to Mexico" by Carl Franz. It will be invaluable. Also get a Lonely Planet or Moon Guide for the area to get an idea of where to stay.

Avoid CanCun because its really expensive, instead use Playa del Carmen as your base in Yucatan .

In food you can spend about $20-$30 USD a day for good quality meals. For low quality - street food you can even survive with $7USD a day but I wouldn't recommend it.





I recomend you Mexico city, guanajuato, Morelia, Playa del carmen, Oaxaca, San Cristobal, Puebla, Cozumel.
